One-Day Trip to Archangel Michael Panormitis

Do you want to visit the Monastery of Taxiarchis Michael (Panormitis) in Symi? It’s a must-see sight and the most important religious monument of Symi. Thousands of Christians visit it every year. The monastery fills the natural harbor with the imposing bell tower and countless cells. You can reach the monastery by the sea or road. There is a written report on the existence of the monastery from the 15th century. Of particular interest is the pebble yard with beautiful geometric patterns. Its bell tower is similar to that of the Zagorsk Monastery, near Moscow. In the sacristy of the monastery are kept vows (tamata) – which are put in bottles by the sailors – and it is said that the sea “washes” them. According to the locals, if a vow is not fulfilled, the Saint goes and takes the vow himself and for this reason they call him “Thief”.

"I went out on two boat tours with Giorgos during a sunny week in October. Having missed a taxi boat I stumbled upon the Victor Minas traditional wooden boat by accident and asked if there was any way they could bring me to Marathounta bay that day. Captain Giorgos took me there and picked me up again later that day for a very reasonable price. It was a great experience! We saw a couple loggerhead turtles (Carretta Carretta) and even a seal! Marathounta Bay is a hidden treasure, great for swimming and the only restaurant in this secludes bay serves delicious food which you kind of share with a bunch of adorable goats roaming the beach. A few days later I booked another trip with the Victor Minas. Since I was alone I shared the trip with some very friendly Danes. We went to the monastery of Panormitis and on the way we stopped at various stunningly beautiful bays, like Nanou Bay and San Marina. Giorgos is super professional but doesn’t forget to make it fun too. Traditional Greek drinks (beer and ouzo) were served and he even played the Greek lute for us. We returned just before sunset to the harbor town of Yialos. It was an afternoon to cherish and never forget!"
